Avoch School

This photo was sent to my mother in the late 1970's or early 1980's from Annie Baron daughter of my Great Aunt Kate Jack of Avoch. Sadly Annie and her mother have both since passed away.
On the back it says "wee school at Avoch. It is no longer used now as they have a new one.'

I ca still remember my first day there and hanging onto the railings because I didn't want to leave my mother to whom I was clinging to! I remember sitting next to Betty MacLeman and the different things we did, working with raffia etc. Do you remember me Elizabeth MacLeay Gault, the Banker's daughter. I also remember George Brodie (Tickles) and his friend Tubbie. I also remember Miss Young and her stoking up the fire in the classroom and those awful bottles of milk next to the radiator. How I detested that milk! I remember getting the belt for going down to pond with my friend Ewena Wylie. Incidentally she pushed me in because I wasn't being kind to her. How much we learn as we get older,62 now and I still feel like a young thing. Life is too short. I am a Christian now and life has become so much better. How about you? Please let me know as I would love to hear from you.

It would be lovely to see that picture. On my frist day I can remember going home early because I thought school was over for the day. Sadly Mam had to take me back. I was a right Mammy's girl and hated being away from her!

Where are you living now Mary? Last I heard about you was you worked with Oxfam. Nowadays I live in Camelon, Falkirk and very happy here with the best neighbours. I live with my wee dog Poppy, a Jack Russell with long legs and very energetic! Lovely to hear from you. Elizabeth MacLeay

You are doing a great work Mary. Do you remember Linda Wallace? I'm sure you do. She is in America now with her family. She had contacted Hermie Cameron Protheroe. Do you go to Avoch at all? I remember your brother Lewis Red Lewie as he is called. Funny I am remembering you and I at the burn in Avoch burying a dead bird in a matchbox. Great the memories which come back to you. Good to hear from you. Elizabeth
