School GardenI think this may be the school garden beside the burn - not sure of date, maybe early 1900's

I can remember my Dad speaking about this garden and he was born in 1908.

I think it is actually the garden belonging to "Ross's School". This was an Episcopal school run by Canon Spence Ross who was rector of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Fortrose. My uncle who was born in 1898 went to "Ross's School" and I think he is in this photo.

Grace your Uncle and my Grandfather must have gone to school together. My Grandfather William MacLeman went to Ross's school although he called it the Mackenzie Foundation school. He was born in 1895 but I have no idea if he is in this photo. My grandmother Jane Jack was born in 1902 but she went to the other school.

That's right Ann, the school was called the Mackenzie Foundation although it was known in Avoch as "Ross's School". If you look at Robin Whyte's photo No. 140 "Avoch in the frost" - the large red stone building in the foreground is the Mackenzie Foundation.

I wonder if the young girl could be a relative of mine named Jessie Cunningham. When registering with the Teachers Registration Council she stated she was an Assistant Mistress at the MacKenzie Foundation School, Avoch, Ross-shire 1907-1908.

I wonder if it was WW1 time.
It could be the Avoch chain gang. ASBO's 1900
