What is a scantach? (pardon my ignorance)

I’m speaking from memory here . . . but I think a scantach was a long line with many hooks (20 or more). I can remember my grandfather sitting in the shed with his oilskin apron baiting the hooks with lugworm dug up at low tide on the shore. I’m not sure what the fish were. The herring were pretty well fished out by the time the photo was taken. Flat fish would be there . . . I remember ‘plashaks’ (good eating) and ‘blin geordies’ (not so good). Apologies to any out there who still speak Archie!
